REY SAEM

Born in Iceland, so close to the moon and feeling its presence, but I had to
learn to build the house, learn to draw and paint. In 1981 I graduated as a
carpenter in Iceland and after that went to Copenhagen, Denmark to
study architecture. I graduated from the Royal Danish Academy in 1988.
I worked in Iceland as an architect, and also had the responsibility for
putting up an exhibition about architecture and things connected with art.
In 1998 I started painting and drawing landscapes, sculpting and making models of my architectural projects.
In 2009 I moved to Toronto and have been painting and doing some landscaping. I got my Canadian Permanent Residency in 2016.
Like alchemists, I like to transform ordinary materials such as glue, foam, canvas and board into love. Some of my pieces have a whimsical quality.
About FIVE - September 2017: When I was five years old I planned to move away from home …
I didn’t fit in, I was seeing all these people who were gone (dead). I wanted to move to another planet. So I planned to move to the moon, build myself a house and also find a cave where I could go fishing and talk to the stars.
First I had to build a racing car (kassabil in Icelandic) that I could transform into a rocket.
This is my first art show and I have not been to the moon yet. They say “don’t fall in love with a dreamer”.
But love is the meaning of life.
